 Convention for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

Oral traditions and expressions; performing arts; know-how related to traditional craftsmanship; social practices, rituals and festive events; knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe are the elements that constitute the Intangible cultural Heritage.

 

This Intangible cultural Heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.

The Convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage adopted by the UNESCO Member States in the 32nd session of the General Conference on 17 October 2003, in Paris. This convention plays an important role in bringing human beings closer together and ensuring exchange andunderstanding among them. Algeria has ratified the convention of the UNESCO for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage in 15 March 2004.

The list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity         

  • The Ahellil of Gourara  is a poetic and musical genre emblematic of the Zenete population of Gourara (southwest,Algeria) performed during the collective ceremonies. The Ahellil of Gourara was listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in  2008.
  • The wedding  costume of Tlemcen, rituals and know-how of traditional craftsmanship were listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.

Following a request from Algeria to the UNESCO, a draft agreement between both parties has been adopted in regards to the establishment and the functioning of a regional center for thesafeguard of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Africa. This draft agreement has been validated and will be presented during the 192ndsession of the executive council of the UNESCO.

The aim of this regional center is to contribute to the realization of the strategic objectives and to obtain the expected results with respect to the priorities of the program of the UNESCO̓ in the field of safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage of the region.
